SMUDGIE
ODE TO AN ANIMAL SHELTER VOLUNTEER
She walks through the door, flops down in a chair;
Lets out a sigh and lets down her hair;
Tough day at work at the shelter today;
Over-full, once again, for no neuter or spay.
Cage after cage, such sadness, despair,
Bewildered, confused - Does no one care?
And yet, the next day, she returns.
Few appreciate her dedication; few understand
The tightness enclosing her heart like a band
When one of her charges must take that last walk;
Her throat tightens up and chokes - she can't talk.
She wants them all to find homes, someone to ease fears.
Her pleas for reprieve seem to fall on deaf ears.
But still, the next day, she returns.
Sometimes she wishes she could be less involved
Or think of a way for the problem to be solved.
No one could know just how often she's cried
For those she couldn't save - for those who have died.
She works such long hours, so hard everyday
Little appreciated, and of course, for no pay.
But, again, the next day, she returns.
Some days she wonders "Why continue to bother?"
Then she looks in the eyes of some kittens and mother.
She smiles, with unshed tears glistening in her eyes
Gives loving pats to calm more fearful cries.
Every night with a sob, she bids her charges goodbye
And wonders if she'll get home and not break down and cry.
And she wonders if, the next day, she'll return.
A pitiful mew, she looks over the room.
Kitten needs her attention; she pulls out of her gloom.
This one is one she's managed to save.
Labeled as vicious, with love he behaves.
The shy one emerges, so tentative at first;
Upon recognition, she runs with a burst.
The lazy boy stretches and yawns at the most
And purrs - big change from the starving, thin ghost.
So much love and gratitude they give her, she can't comprehend
Why these bundles of fur are thrown away in the end.
Her rescues remind her why she made her choice.
Her charges, they need her, for they have not their own voice.
Of course, she'll return: she is needed.
It has just been a tough week.

Morning has come it's another day,
Bartolomeo brings in a mouse and wants to play, I make my coffee, and heat up the rolls, he looks up at me with his sweet little face,
and gets all cozy by the fireplace,
I glance out my window towards hills of green,
I smile, Spring is here and all beauty is seen,
Bartolomeo curls up in his favorite warm spot,
and I whisper to him Barti, I Love You alot!
And the mouse I say? Where is he now? he's run for his life far from Barti meow!!

Eight years ago a friend offered me
two little kittens – as cute as could be.
I never was able to have pets when a girl,
my siblings have allergies; now, I’d give it a whirl.
I brought them both home in a cage made for a bird,
and laughed all the way, for the sight was absurd.
I very quickly learned that they both were quite smart.
They taught me to be a regular at my local PetsMart.
Their warm, purring bodies just melt all my stress,
but, their playful antics leave the apartment a mess.
Yes, these two little critters have provided much pleasure,
though constant demands have cut down on my leisure.
Each one of these sisters has her own set of traits. Some things that one loves the other one hates. Apache’s a calico and Cheyenne’s a tabby. Funny Face is bossy, and Poopsie is flabby.
At their last birthday they reached 48 human years. Their advanced aging is one of my biggest fears. Next year they’ll get purple boas and lovely red hats, because these lively ladies are my 2gr8cats!

Be they cat-girl,
or be they cat-boy,
Kittens are always
such bundles of joy.
boundless energy that
they do possess,
soon can be turned
to making a mess.
But our hearts they
can easily steal,
with a purr or meow
with innocent zeal.
They'll grow into cats
who get into spats,
or chase round the house
an invisble mouse,
then nap all the time,
which I find sublime.
for had I my wish,
I'd not come back a fish,
being a cat
that's where it's at!

There once was a kitty named Kali,
who disliked her new friend Allie.
She'd go after Allie with a swat and a hiss,
and say,
"What did I do to deserve this?"

Grace of movement;
Aloof and secure;
The Lord of his kingdom;
The hunter so sure.
She choses you;
Not the other way around;
But once you are chosen;
You are eternally bound.
If you cross a feline;
It will never forget:
So be very, very careful;
If you take a kitty as your pet.
There is one thing for sure;
No cat person will deny;
That kitty in your lap;
Is a natural high.
So scritch that little chin;
And rub those fuzzy ears;
And pray to the heavens;
That you will have this friend for years.

There was an orange tiger named Rusty,
..Whose middle name should have been "Trusty". Without knowing why,
and a tear in our eye. overflowing with comfort he gave.
Such a small little thing, but it made our hearts sing,
every moment to see he was near. No words could compare,
to the love that he shared,
That little orange tiger named Rusty.

Ferret and Snoopy running through the house.
You would think they saw a mouse.
But neer a mouse or the outside world have they ever seen,

My Kokomo boy was called off to heaven
I was caught unaware
Wasn’t prepared for his leaving.
I was blessed that he entered my life
On gloomy days he made it so bright.
But of my world he will always be a part
All curled up and nestled
In a corner of my heart.

All my furries
Purr a song that's just their own
Some are loud,some are soft
Each one special that warms my heart
Smiles on their faces as they sing,eyes
half closed
Content knowing all is well in the world
Frosty
Friendly shiny fur
meowing their way through the house
I hear a loud purr

A cat is a treasure to behold
It will keep you cosy when you are cold
It will lull you to sleep with gentle purrs
And chat with noisy kitty meows
If you multiply cat x 3
A trio of handsome boys you’ll see
There’s Bart and Marty and wee cheeky Scout
Who I just could not live my life without
Fluffy
My cream colored boy with his points of dark brown, burrowed into my heart when I was down. Unconditional love with cuddle and kiss, you lit up my life with something I miss. One day you were gone, I cried and I pled, but sadly with no choice I sent you ahead. I sent you ahead so you could find all the loved ones who live on in my mind.

** CONGRATULATIONS TO ROOMIE FOR THE WINNING POEM **
Simba.
We crawl into bed, me and my cat, and you curl round my head like a soft furry hat.
I reach for your belly, then massage your toes and then am rewarded by your wet little nose.
Your purrs are a lullaby that ease me to sleep, how you sow love, then that's what you reap.
One day you will leave me, I'm quite sure of that - but tonight I'm content with my soft furry hat
Roomie
He walks in majesty through the night.
at his green eyed gaze the mice take fright.
He stalks the house tail up his tread is bold does what he likes not what he is told.
Though small in size he hast the feline lion's heart of might.
Yet in the dawn is mellowed by the warm sunlight.
Once more a gentle pet he sits beside me with a purr,
as I stroke his silken fur.
Together we sit two friends growing old.
